Innovation in the Health Care
Making Traditional Health Care Mainstream
Himalaya’s journey in health care began in 1930, when a young man with a very curious mind pondered the idea of presenting herbal medicine in a contemporary form.
Mr. Manal, our Founder, while traveling through the forests in Burma, saw villagers pacifying restless elephants by feeding them the root of the plant Rauwolfia serpentina.

Fascination with Nature fueled Mr. Manal’s four years of research, leading to Serpina® – the world’s first natural anti-hypertensive drug in 1934. Pioneering herbal tablets 90 years ago, he envisioned contemporizing Ayurveda. When traditional medicines were only available as powders, tinctures, and decoctions, our Founder introduced traditional medicines in widely accepted formats like tablets and syrups—making herbal medicine mainstream. Serpina®’s success reinforced his belief in well-researched herbal medicines, leading to landmark contributions like Liv.52®, Cystone®, and Septilin®, which became household names for safe, efficacious, and dependable herbal wellness solutions.

DNA Fingerprinting and Sustainable Sourcing: Himalaya's Dedication to Quality
In 2003, Himalaya received an ISO-9001:2000 certification for herbal health care products, pioneering quality standards in the industry. We employ innovative herb extraction technologies and use Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) fingerprinting, Gas Chromatography (GC), Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer (ICPMS), and other advanced analytical methods for quality control and standardization.
Himalaya collaborates with regulatory agencies like the United States Pharmacopoeia (USP) to establish quality standards. We have implemented Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and Good Field Collection Practices (GFCP) for sustainable herb cultivation and collection. Himalaya has developed DNA Barcodes for over 50 herbs, with 45 published in the prestigious BOLD (Barcode of Life Data System) database in Canada and GenBank®, National Centre for Biotechnology Information (NCBI), National Institute of Health (NIH), USA.
Our R&D team is focused on developing solutions for metabolic lifestyle disorders, dyspepsia, functional gastric and gut issues, migraine, joint disorders especially gout, neurocognitive conditions, reproductive and women’s health, among other health conditions.
Himalaya’s formulations are rooted in natural, health care practices, with a team of experts from diverse specialties reviewing and selecting herbs for research. We ensure consistent quality through phytochemical profiling, crop cultivation under agricultural scientists’ supervision, and sustainable collection and harvesting practices.
Himalaya employs bioassay-guided fractionation and purification technology to identify active fractions, ensuring standardized herbal preparations with required levels of bioactive compounds necessary for an optimal pharmacological response. This technology is leveraged while designing innovative treatments for various ailments, including liver problems, impaired immunity, diabetes, mental health conditions, and gut dysbiosis, as well as for specialized products in skin, oral, and hair care.
At the Forefront of Safe and Innovative
Health Care
Himalaya also utilizes Supercritical Fluid (SCF) extraction, a cutting-edge green extraction technology, to enrich bioactive compounds from herbs, guaranteeing solvent-free, safe, and effective products. Extracts from single herbs or combinations are first tested on disease models to evaluate their efficacy against various conditions. Once efficacy is confirmed, these potent extracts undergo rigorous toxicity and mutagen studies to ensure safe human testing.
In addition, Himalaya leads in adopting innovative, consumer-friendly, and technologically advanced formulation platforms in natural health care. Our vision is to develop cutting-edge formulation technologies to meet next-generation requirements.
